Our Story: From Bffs to Everlasting Love

It was a cool December day in New York City. Kayla had just started her new job as an Office Manager at Big Human, a tech agency focused on website and app design. Her beautiful friend and all-star bridesmaid Mariann Kukielka had hooked her up with the gig. Kayla met several kind people that day, but one person stood out in particular. This person would undoubtedly bring her more joy than she could ever imagine.

With his deep brown eyes and magnificent bone structure illuminated by bright green ones and zeros, Kayla was immediately captivated by the sexy software engineer upstairs. Notorious for developing work crushes, she worried that this may be a problem. “I bet he’s cocky anyway…” she thought to herself (Jake was one of the top coders at the agency after all), but she couldn’t help but remain curious about this technological wizard.

Moments later, she received a message on her computer.

“Hey! I’m new on staff too! Would you like to join me and the dev team for ramen at lunch?” The message was from Jake.

“Of course!” Kayla responded excitedly (with a hint of nervous butterflies thrown into the mix.)

“Great! I’ll message you when we leave.”

Needless to say, the lunch ended up being a blast. Everyone was so sweet, and Kayla even discovered that Jake was a complete metal-head (which is totally her type). The crush began to thicken.

But a few days later, Kayla heard Jake mention something to one of his peers.

“Yea I’m taking my girlfriend mini-golfing this weekend! Do you and your girlfriend wanna join?”

“A girlfriend!??! Nooo!!!” Kayla thought to herself with disappointment. “Ahh well… it makes sense. Why would somebody like that be single?”

However, even despite this news, Jake continued to be a kind and welcoming colleague to Kayla. Because of this, she retracted her feelings and the two of them just ended up becoming great friends.

They would sit by each other at lunch, slack message about awesome metal bands, and hang out at company gatherings. Eventually Kayla ended up dating somebody else, and the four of them would go on double dates. They always had a lot of fun, and she loved having another great friend at work.

A couple months later Kayla left Big Human to pursue her Masters in Education. Luckily this did not stop their friendship--in fact the two became even closer. They would grab drinks weekly, and talk about everything from work to relationships to memes. Their bond continued to grow.

After two years of friendship, there became a point where both of them were single. Jake was hanging out with Kayla’s sister Alison, and was relaying the details of a terrible Tinder date. Alison, the all-knowing match-maker, intervened.

“Why don’t you just date Kayla?!”

It turns out that they had even more in common than they thought. Jake invited Kayla out for drinks shortly after, and started the conversation off with “So I know Alison’s already told you this, so let’s just address the elephant in the room… I have feelings for you, and I hear you have feelings for me too.” Kayla was beyond ecstatic.

The two eventually kissed and the sparks were undeniable. The chemistry was officially established, and the rest is history.

Jake inevitably popped the question in a quarantine fairytale setting, There was a trail of rose petals throughout the apartment. It started at the door and headed first to the counter where there was a new black gown waiting for her. It then made its way upstairs to the roof where Jake was waiting with the ring in hand, ready to make all of Kayla’s hopeless romantic dreams come true.

Kayla and Jake have had a beautiful relationship. Their foundations in friendship allowed for a very strong bond and they continue to enjoy each other’s company day after day. Their story is a long and complicated one, but ultimately that’s what makes it stronger <3
